The Six Critical Success Factors

Overview

The North Carolina School of the Arts began its strategic planning effort in Fall 2001. The Internal Strategic Planning Committee (ISP) worked during the school year to develop an understanding of our strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and issues. Subsequent to ISP’s inquiries, in September 2002, faculty, staff, board and student representatives helped the School both to better understand current trends in the arts and conservatories and to identify six areas that are critical factors to the success of the School. The planning process has been inclusive. Every effort has been made to involve as many interested individuals as possible at every stage of planning so that the Strategic Plan would reflect the input of the NCSA community, boards and other constituents.

Working groups were established to develop the School’s Vision, Mission and Principles statements as well as Action Plans that would address the Critical Success Factors. Their work has been reviewed extensively with NCSA constituents. The Vision and Mission drive all the efforts of the School and reflect UNC’s overall Long Range Goals. Constituents will be able to use the Vision and Mission statements to center their efforts and shape their supporting plans and activities for both short and long-range objectives. The Principles provide a context that serve constituents as a reminder of the School’s strategic priorities. Principles are a compass by which choices, priorities and activities will be guided.

The Strategic Plan articulates our view of NCSA’s existing strengths, areas identified for reallocation of resources, development, strategic goals, action plans and our projection of the direction the School will take from the period starting 2004-2009.

The Vision and Mission provide a basis for the Strategic Plan’s Critical Success Factors. The full length plan identifies Existing Strengths, Areas for Development, Strategic Goals, specific Action Plans and targeted Activities. The Chancellor, Provost, Vice Chancellors, Associate Vice Chancellors and Deans are monitoring and assessing the fulfillment of the Critical Success Factors.

North Carolina School of the Arts Vision Statement

The North Carolina School of the Arts is committed to expanding its role as a leader in creating the artistic culture of tomorrow by shaping the artists of today.

North Carolina School of the Arts Mission Statement

The North Carolina School of the Arts is the University of North Carolina’s conservatory for the arts, dedicated entirely to the professional training of students possessing exceptional talents in the performing, visual and moving image arts. Students enter NCSA when they are ready for focused, intense professional development at the baccalaureate level and in select programs at the master’s and high school levels in its schools of Dance, Design and Production, Drama, Filmmaking, and Music.

Committed to the idea that art combines craft, imagination, passion and intellect, the faculty work with students in a residential setting to create an educational community that is intimate, demanding and performance-centered. Learning is enriched by access to an academic program responsive to a conservatory curriculum; research and creative opportunities in the arts; student life programs and support; dedicated staff; outstanding facilities; community service activities; guest artists and teachers; and distinguished alumni. Students emerge transformed, poised to become leaders and creators in their chosen fields.

Founded by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly to be both an educational institution and a resource enhancing the cultural life of the State of North Carolina and the region, NCSA offers numerous public performances, both on- and off-campus, community education in the arts, as well as faculty and student lectures and workshops. The School collaborates with educational, cultural, civic, business and other partners to promote the universal importance and innovative impact of the arts to our society.

The Six Critical Success Factors

The Internal Strategic Planning Committee identified the following Critical Success Factors (CSFs) as tasks that require both immediate and long-term attention and action, if the School is going to meet the challenges of its future. CSFs 1-5 focus on the “inside”—on the campus, its population, its programs, and the financing necessary for its support; CSF 6 looks to the “outside” – at communicating who we are to perspective students, supporters and other constituencies. The CSFs are not listed in order of priority and are often so interconnected that work on one will require simultaneous work on others.

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR #1:
Define, communicate and encourage NCSA’s distinctive environment, where new ideas are considered and change is embraced, by strengthening relevance of curriculum, programs and performances.

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR #2:
Expand and enrich the whole life experience of the NCSA community

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR #3
Increase inclusiveness and diversity on campus

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR #4
Improve organizational infrastructure, including support systems and procedures, communications and buildings

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR #5
Increase funding for scholarships, salaries, professional development, facilities and curriculum development.

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR #6
Develop and implement a comprehensive, integrated marketing and recruiting strategy
