High School Program: grades 8-12 for ballet and grades 11-12 for contemporary dance.
- 10th grade students interested in contemporary dance will be given special consideration at the time of audition.
- On-campus housing is available for students in grades 9-12.
- 8th grade applicants must live at home and within commuting distance of the North Carolina School of the Arts.
College applicants may pursue either a Bachelor of Fine Arts or a College Arts Diploma in ballet or contemporary dance.
- The application for admission must be completed in full.
- Applicant signature is required along with the parent signature if the applicant is under the age of 18 at the time of application.
- Mail the application to the Office of Admissions along with the nonrefundable application fee ($60 for U.S. Citizens/Permanent U.S. Resident/$110 for international applicants).
- Applications received without the application fee or all questions not answered will be returned to applicant.
- Applicants are encouraged to submit their application by the suggested application deadline to secure the audition date they desire and to allow time for travel arrangements.
- All required documentation must be on file in order for the applicant to find out if they have been accepted by the Admissions Review Committee into the North Carolina School of the Arts.
Application Information in Admissions
Scheduling an Audition
- Applicants must write the date and city in which they desire to audition on the application.
- Written confirmation of the audition date, time and location will be mailed to the applicant from the Office of Admissions after the application has been processed.
- Please allow ten working days for processing.
- Auditions will not be scheduled by phone.
- Applicants are encouraged to submit their application by the suggested deadline to secure the audition date desire and allow time for travel arrangements.
- The North Carolina School of the Arts reserves the right to cancel and reschedule auditions, or make other arrangements with the applicant. If weather prohibits an audition from being held the cancellation notice will be placed on www.ncarts.edu.
Audition Requirements (High School and Undergraduate Programs)
- Auditions in both ballet and contemporary dance begin with a short class. A dance faculty member demonstrates all of the dance combinations to be executed.
- Applicants for ballet or contemporary dance must wear practice clothes; no particular leotard color is required for the audition.
- Applicants are to wear no jewelry and hair must be worn up.
Ballet Applicants
- In addition to the above requirements, female ballet applicants may be asked to do pointe work.
Contemporary Applicants
- In addition to the above requirements, contemporary dance applicants must also present a self-choreographed solo, two to three minutes in length, danced to classical music.
- Examples of classical music composers are Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, or Copland. Music that is not classical is unacceptable. The classical music you choose for the audition solo must be on audiocassette or compact disc and cued appropriately.
Videotaped Audition Requirements (High School and Undergraduate Programs)
All DVD/videotapes must be received no later than Friday, July 11, 2008 by the Office of Admissions. Videotapes/DVDs accepted only in VHS format. International applicants must supply DVD/Videotape in Region 1 format. Applicants must wear practice clothes; no particular leotard color is required.
Ballet applicants must include the following steps on their videotape:
- At the barre – plié, port de bras, tendu, tendu jeté, rond de jambe par terre, frappé, fondu, rond de jambe en l’air de coté, développé, and grand battement.
- In the center – battement tendu with épaulement, pirouette, petite allegro, and grand allegro.
- A solo of classical variation. Women must present their solo on pointe. Ballet solos should be one to two minutes in length.
Contemporary applicants must include a short technical demonstration at the barre or center and include the following steps:
- Plié, tendu/dégagé (straight and with plié from fifth), rond de jambe, passé développé (front, side, and back), grand battement, and a balance on one leg. Movements should be short, but should demonstrate clarity of form and should not exceed five minutes.
- In addition, a two- to three-minute self-choreographed solo must be performed to classical music. Examples of classical music are Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart and Copland.
The following is a complete on-campus listing of the School of Dance auditions for the Summer Session 2008 and academic year 2008-09. If you wish to be considered for admission, you must audition either in person on one of the following dates, or submit a DVD/videotaped audition, to be considered for the academic year and the Summer Session. The North Carolina School of the Arts reserves the right to cancel and reschedule auditions, or make other arrangements with the applicant.

All on-campus auditions will take place in the School of Dance on the North Carolina School of the Arts campus. Audition times are to be determined and will be posted once established.

In addition to the required documentation listed for the undergraduate or high school programs, international applicants must provide the following information:

- Official transcripts from each school attended that bears a seal or registrar’s signature and a notarized English translation of each transcript.
- Transcript must include the courses in which the applicant is enrolled at the time if application.
- Verification of sufficient funds to cover the first year of enrollment or affidavit of support from a bank or sponsor is required.
- A North Carolina School of the Arts Financial Statement Form must be completed by the applicant. The link for the form is:

- Applicant is to provide a copy of their current passport, visa and/or I-20.
- Decisions concerning admission are made only after all candidates have auditioned.
- The Admissions Review Committee (the Office of Admissions, Undergraduate Academic/High School Academic Program and Student Life) will review applicant files that are recommended for acceptance and make the final admission decision.
- All required materials must be on file for the applicant to be reviewed by the Admissions Review Committee. No incomplete files will be reviewed.
- If submitting an online application, print, sign and mail to the Office of Admissions immediately after submitting the application the
Application Agreement Statement.
- Complete and sign the Provision of Social Security Number form provided with the application.
- Complete the top section of the Mandatory Information Form, sign and give the form to your guidance counselor or college advisor. If currently not enrolled in school, the form may be given to an employer, mentor, instructor, etc.
- Signatures of family members or legal guardians will not be accepted. Form is required of ALL APPLICANTS.
- For your records keep copies of the application and all materials mailed to the Office of Admissions. Items can get lost in the mail and cannot be returned.
