Twyla Tharp’s “Deuce Coupe,” Winter Dance 2001
“Twyla Tharp’s ‘Deuce Coupe’, a virtual flurry of movement that borders on chaos in the ensemble pieces, somehow manages not to spin out of control. Tharp choreographs to the outer edges of dance, barely maintaining order. This sort of risk-taking is thrilling to watch. This ballet, created in 1973, seemed as fresh as if it had just been invented. The American Ballet Theatre Studio Company joined the arts school dancers in ‘Deuce Coupe’ and the two groups combined wonderfully well. If one didn’t know which dancers were with which company, it would have been impossible to distinguish them. Rose Marie Wright and Rebecca Wright, who performed in ‘Deuce Coupe’s’ premiere, taught it to the ABT and arts school dancers for this performance. Three panels of 1980s style graffiti served as the backdrop to this frenzied, frisky dance done to music by the Beach Boys.”
