Ballet

High School and Middle School Program (Grades 8 - 12)

Ballet students must be at least 12 years old and in the eighth grade to be admitted to the program. Please note: On-campus housing is available only for students in the ninth grade and above. Younger students who are admitted must live at home within commuting distance.

College Program


The Bachelor of Fine Arts and Arts Diploma are awarded on the fulfillment of professional standards determined by the faculty of the School of Dance. Dance course requirements are the same for the B.F.A. and Arts Diploma; however, academic program courses are not required for the diploma.

Students are expected to complete the course of study for the degree or diploma in four years or less. A student may, on occasion, receive advanced placement for certain fourth-year courses if he or she performs for a nine-month period with a professional dance company recognized by the School of Dance faculty.

Contemporary

High School Program (Grades 11-12)

Contemporary students must be in the 11th grade to be admitted, although special consideration may be given to exceptionally gifted 10th-grade applicants.

All high school students follow the academic curriculum prescribed by the state of North Carolina for its high school diploma. Many students who complete their high school studies at the School of the Arts can fulfill the college undergraduate requirements in fewer than four years.

Dance Performance

Preparatory Dance Program

The Preparatory Dance Program at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts will be holding auditions for the upcoming school year on Saturday, August 15, 2009 in studio 608 in the workplace building on the UNCSA campus.  Children must be rising 3rd through 7th graders to be eligible.  Registration is from 9:30-10:00; audition for rising 3rd and 4th graders 10:00-11:00; audition for rising 5th thru 7th graders 11:00-12:00.  There is no fee for the audition.  Classes begin mid-September.

The Preparatory Dance Program is a pre-professional dance training program whose goal is to prepare students for entry into the School of Dance’s junior high and high school professional divisions.  Classes meet after-school and are tuition-free for children who are accepted into the Program.  For more information about the Preparatory Dance Program, please contact the Program Director, Dayna Fox, at 336-734-2882 or by email at foxd@uncsa.edu.
