In 1997, a grant from Dr. and Mrs. James Semans and the Cannon Foundation enabled the School of the Arts to reestablish its Archives and reconnect with its institutional memory.  Just as individuals grow and learn from experience, so does an institution.  Experience implies a past, a history, and institutions which are able to learn from their past are able to function more effectively. Institutional memory permits informed dialogue and continuity and/or change.  It is critical to growth and development.

The collections in the archives consist of the historical records (University archives) of the school and several manuscript collections including: the papers and oral history interviews of the founders of the School;  papers relating to several of the early professional affiliate companies of the School;  the International Music Program papers of Dr. James H. Semans and Giorgio Ciompi; and the papers of opera mezzo-soprano, Gladys Swarthout and lighting designer Nanane Porcher. In addition, the Archives has a very significant collection of audio-visual materials relating to school performances and official ceremonies. The holdings consist of approximately 15,000 linear feet of materials dating from 1963 to the present.

Printed inventories and indexes for collections can be found in the Reading Room and more extensive finding aids will be encoded for the web and uploaded as they are completed.

The Archives actively encourages use of its collections by all interested persons. Archive materials do not circulate and are available for use in our Reading Room only. Research requests by mail, telephone or e-mail are welcome and will be responded to as quickly as possible. For patrons coming from a distance, a consultation is recommended to ensure availability of materials.
