Basic Musicianship Skills
A college preparatory course designed to help students achieve fluency in written and aural fundamentals of music. Class work is supplemented by required drillwork in the music lab. Successful completion of this course is a requirement of the Arts Concentration designation.
Introduction to Aural Skills
A course designed to prepare students for undergraduate aural skills work, including sight singing and dictation. Instructor’s permission required for enrollment. Prerequisite: Basic Musicianship Skills.
Introduction to Music Literature
A college preparatory course focusing on detailed stylistic consideration (both aurally and through score study) of selected representative works from the contrasting styles of western art music from the middle ages to the present. Works are placed in broad historical and cultural context, but the priority of the course is score study. Prerequisite: Basic Musicianship Skills.
Performance Attendance
Attendance or performance at this weekly class is required of all high school and undergraduate students.
Introduction to NCSA
For all new high school students, this required course is an extended orientation to NCSA. Academic, arts, and social aspects of campus life are considered. Graded as pass/fail.
Private Instruction
One hour of private instruction per week on specialty instrument, voice, or composition. Students also attend a weekly performance class or composition seminar as appropriate to their major.
Intensive Arts Projects
During the two-week period following the Thanksgiving break, students participate in special projects, classes, seminars, and performances. Students must enroll in Intensive Arts each fall term they are in attendance at NCSA. Graded as pass/fail.
