Woodwinds Faculty
Tadeu Coelho, John Ellis,  Igor Begelman, Mark Popkin, Taimur Sullivan

In addition to academics, woodwind students enroll in private lessons, performance class, music theory, ear training, sight-reading, ensembles and additional arts electives. Ensemble participation is determined by juried auditions. Students may be chosen to perform with the Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, School of the Arts Contemporary Ensemble (SACE), Cantata Singers and chamber music groups.


Bassoon
In addition to the guidelines above, students working toward the High School Diploma in Bassoon will study reed-making, bassoon maintenance and repair, and the important orchestral and chamber music works.


Clarinet
Students in the high school clarinet program work toward developing excellence and ease in tone, intonation, rhythm, technique, articulation and musicality; confidence in performance; and learning standard solo and ensemble repertoire.

The repertoire listed below is an indication of the range and difficulty of works typically studied by a clarinet student in the high school program. It does not necessarily indicate required repertoire.

Flute
Students entering the high school flute program complete a primary curriculum which includes study of scales, arpeggios, tone control, musical figurations and phrasing. Also included are studies by J.M. Damase, L. Hugues, M. Marchesi and the orchestral flute practice books by Trevor Wye. After completing the primary course, students will continue a progressive course of technical, solo, chamber and orchestral works appropriate to their level.

Oboe
Students in the high school oboe program work toward developing excellence and ease in tone, intonation, rhythm, technique, articulation and musicality; confidence in performance; and learning standard solo and ensemble repertoire.


Saxophone
Students working toward the High School Diploma in Saxophone will focus on the fundamentals of tone production and technique, and will cover a variety of styles, including etudes, standard concert literature, and jazz. Students wishing to specialize in the performance of jazz music may choose to audition for the jazz ensemble, and enroll in jazz improvisation and jazz arranging.
