One hour per week of individual performance instruction at an advanced level of study.
MUS 599: Intensive Arts Projects (2 Credits per term)
During the two-week period immediately following Thanksgiving break, students participate in special projects, classes, seminars and performances. Students are encouraged to pursue musical studies; however, interdisciplinary interests may be considered. Students must enroll in the course each fall term they are in attendance at NCSA. The course is graded "pass/fail."
MUS 800: Individual Performance Instruction (3 Credits per term)
One hour per week of individual performance instruction at an advanced level.
MUS 840: Ensemble Performance (2 Credit per Term)
Accompanying, Cantata Singers, chamber music, Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra or Wind Ensemble as assigned by the studio teacher in consultation with the ensemble director.
MUS 879: Fletcher Opera Institute Project (3 Credits per Term)
An advanced course of study in all aspects of opera performance. The project will include participation in two productions each year, workshops, master classes, coaching sessions, performances and tours.
MUS 890: Performance Class (1 Credit per Term)
Weekly performance class in which students will be critiqued by faculty and students for the purpose of refining their performance skills.
MUS 899: Professional Artist Project (9 Credits per Term)
A significant project devoted to the performance of a specialized repertoire or area of artistic interest that will bridge the student's entry into his or her professional career.
Collaborative Performance
The candidate could arrange an innovative performance, perhaps in collaboration with someone from outside of the School of Music. For instance, the student could work with a lighting designer, costume designer or dancer to stage an innovative performance of a work.
Composition Commission and Performance
The candidate could commission a composition and organize the premiere performance and recording. The student might also be required to arrange at least one off-campus performance of the commissioned piece. The performer could collaborate with the composer during the genesis of the work during fall and winter terms and prepare the piece for performance in spring term.
Performances in Non-Traditional Venues
The candidate could arrange a tour of 3-4 "informances" in non-traditional venues (i.e. lobby of a heavily populated area such as a hospital, office building, school, etc). For instance, a tour might consist of a noontime concert in the lobby of the Wachovia building, a second at Baptist Hospital, a third in the lobby of Performance Place. The candidate would develop appropriate and creative programs, arrange the performances, advertise and implement the tour.
Preparation of Performance Edition
The candidate could find a manuscript and prepare a performance edition of the work, with score and parts. The candidate would also arrange a performance and recording. |
