The undergraduate composition program includes a broad array of academic courses in addition to a rigorous professional education in music. Training in composition is designed to develop skills for the “concert” rather than the “popular” field of music. Students study a wide range of topics designed to enable them to develop and articulate a personal style, and to communicate their musical ideas effectively. The intensive music curriculum provides comprehensive training in composition, conducting, music literature, analysis, orchestration, counterpoint, electronic media, business skills and music research. The diverse conservatory setting of NCSA provides numerous opportunities for candidates to explore innovative ideas in programming and performance. Every effort is made to secure performances and/or recordings for all student composers.
Internationally renowned guest composers supplement the curriculum with lessons, master classes, presentations, and campus performances. The vibrant NCSA artistic community provides the ideal setting for artistic growth in an environment where musicians, dancers, actors, designers and filmmakers live and work together.
