Strings Faculty Group Picture

The goal of the undergraduate string program at the North Carolina School of the Arts is to enable the student to refine technical skills and develop advanced interpretive techniques through the study and performance of significant works from the literature. All undergraduate string students are required to perform a recital in their senior year. Ensemble participation is by juried auditions. Students may be chosen to perform with the Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, School of the Arts Contemporary Ensemble, Cantata Singers and chamber music groups.


Cello
In addition to the guidelines above, students working toward the Bachelor of Music in Cello will be required to prepare and perform a recital program in their senior year. Students in the undergraduate cello program will learn to analyze technical and musical problems, leading toward command of the instrument, mastery of all areas of musicianship and success in performing before an audience.

The repertoire listed below is an indication of the range and difficulty of works typically studied by a cello student in the undergraduate program. It does not necessarily indicate required repertoire.

Solo Works
Bach: Unaccompanied Cello Suites; Concertos by Haydn, Lalo, Elgar, Dvorak

Chamber Music
Works by Beethoven, Schubert, Haydn, Mozart, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Shostakovich

Orchestral Repertoire
Strauss: Don Juan; Mendelssohn: Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherezade; Symphonies of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn


Double Bass
In addition to the guidelines above, students working toward the Bachelor of Music in Double Bass will be required to prepare and perform a recital program in their senior year.
