WINSTON-SALEM – Jeremy Grant of Hamlet, N.C., a college senior studying cinematography in the School of Filmmaking at the North Carolina School of the Arts, has been chosen to receive honorable mention honors from the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). Grant was one of five students in the country to receive the honorable mention designation in competition for the Laszlo Kovacs Heritage Award for Outstanding Cinematography on a student project. Two other students shared the award, which will be presented on Jan. 26, 2008, in Hollywood. Grant was recognized for his work on the third-year film, NEST OF SPIDERS. (The same film won Jesse Pilkes of Paoli, Pa., Best Woman Filmmaker (East Coast) from the Director’s Guild of America’s annual Student Film Awards.) Applicants for the Kovacs Heritage Award, which was established in 1998, must be either in their final year of film school or a recent graduate. Their film submissions must be accompanied by a written recommendation from a film school chair, dean or teacher. The selections were made by a jury of ASC members. Students receiving the ASC award and honorable mentions were from The American Film Institute, the University of Southern California, Chapman University, and Columbia College Chicago, in addition to NCSA. Isidore Mankofsky, ASC, chairman of the organization’s Education Committee, said: “We weren’t looking for beautiful images. We were judging how effectively the films submitted by student cinematographers helped their collaborators present their stories.” Laszlo Kovacs’ extensive body of work includes such classic films as EASY RIDER, FIVE EASY PIECES, SHAMPOO, THE RUNNER STUMBLES, GHOSTBUSTERS, MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING, and MISS CONGENIALITY. He died July 22, 2007.
