Catherine Zeta-Jones and Hugh Jackman To Co-Host

WINSTON-SALEM – North Carolina School of the Arts Chancellor John Mauceri is the musical director for the Third Annual “A Fine Romance,” a star-studded evening celebrating the love affair between Broadway and Hollywood, to benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF).

Oscar-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones and Emmy-winner Hugh Jackman are the co-hosts of the MPTF fund-raiser, which will be held on Saturday evening, Oct. 20, at Sony Pictures in Culver City, Calif.

The stars of stage and screen will gather to perform for the event, accompanied by a live orchestra under the baton of Maestro Mauceri, the founding director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. A breathtaking array of singers from film and stage musicals will perform the songs that have tied both coasts together for decades.

These include: Michael Douglas, Audra McDonald, Dick Van Dyke, Vanessa Williams, Christine Baranski, Jennifer Hudson, Kristin Chenoweth, Chita Rivera, Shirley MacLaine and Raul Esparza.

Also at the event, the MPTF will present its Silver Medallion Award to Thomas C. Short, international president of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada (IATSE). Short is also on the corporate board of directors of the MPTF and is being honored for his efforts on behalf of the fund and service to the organization.

John Mauceri’s distinguished and varied career has brought him not only to the world’s greatest opera companies and symphony orchestras, but also to the musical stages of Broadway and Hollywood as well as the most prestigious halls of academia. He is the former music director of the Washington (National) Opera, the Scottish Opera (Glasgow), the Teatro Regio (Turin, Italy), the Pittsburgh Opera and the American Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

For 16 seasons he directed the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra which was created for him by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1991. His record-breaking tenure of 325 concerts at the 18,000-seat amphitheatre attracted a total audience of some 4 million people. In June of 2007 he was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame with his colleague, Placido Domingo, bringing with him 21 NCSA high school ballet dancers to perform the first movement of Balanchine's Serenade with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, under Mauceri's baton.

Mauceri served on the faculty of Yale University for 15 years and has published articles throughout the world on music and theatre and is a frequent guest on radio and television. With more than 70 CDs to his credit, he is the winner of numerous awards, including the Grammy, Tony, Olivier and two Emmy Awards.

John Mauceri was named the chancellor of the North Carolina School of the Arts in 2006. Last season, he served as music director of NCSA's all-School production of “West Side Story” and took the production to Chicago's prestigious Ravinia Festival. Keeping with his policy of sharing his current experiences with NCSA's students, Mauceri is taking seven students with him for his concert in Vienna's Konzerthaus in November. Members of NCSA's music, drama and film schools will participate.

The chancellor is completing a new book, “Celebrating ‘West Side Story,’” which will document the 2007 production. Having released three new CDs this past year, Mauceri's “A Nutcracker Tale” will be released on Warner Home Video next month.
