WALT DISNEY STUDIOS CHAIRMAN DICK COOK TELLS
NCSA FILM STUDENTS:
“QUALITY IS THE BEST BUSINESS PLAN”

WINSTON-SALEM – "Quality is the best business plan," Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook told North Carolina School of the Arts School of Filmmaking students on his recent visit to the campus.

Cook, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, visited the North Carolina School of the Arts School of Filmmaking recently to both preview his new film and lead a workshop on filmmaking for students.

ENCHANTED, which opens this holiday season, is the story of a fairy-tale princess who lands in real-life New York. The film was met with great enthusiasm by a packed crowd of students and faculty, who were among the very first to see it in its finished form.

Cook was invited to NCSA by Jordan Kerner, new dean of the NCSA School of Filmmaking, and NCSA Chancellor John Mauceri.

At the workshop, Cook answered questions pertaining to movie production, distribution and marketing, as well as questions about managing a large, international corporation with complex business and multifaceted personnel issues. Students had a rare opportunity to interact with the head of a major studio and hear first-hand his perspective on the film industry.

Again and again, Cook returned to the idea of quality and its business importance. He told students that quality films will almost always find their audience, even without the right marketing and distribution plans, but rarely will a film that lacks quality do well over the long haul. Both he and Dean Kerner talked about the importance for a studio of building a library of films that stand the test of time.

Dick Cook was the first in this year's series of guest speakers at the School of Filmmaking – the same series that first brought Dean Kerner to campus last year.
