WINSTON-SALEM -- “Set Sail for Success” is the theme of this year’s Family Weekend at the North Carolina School of the Arts, where parents and other family members of students will hear from the University of North Carolina’s Kemal Atkins about surviving stormy weather and from NCSA alumni about what to do when there’s not smooth sailing. Family members will also hear greetings from NCSA Chancellor John Mauceri and a welcome by Anne White, vice chancellor for student life. Family Weekend will be held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27 and 28, on the NCSA campus, 1533 South Main St., Winston-Salem. Saturday, Oct. 27, will begin with check-in from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. in the BB&T Lobby of the School of Filmmaking Studio Village. Speeches will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Main Theatre of the School of Filmmaking. |

Atkins, who is assistant vice president for academic and student affairs at University of North Carolina General Administration, will talk about surviving campus crises – violence, natural disasters, and public health threats – and how families, students and administrators can work together to “steer a course for success amidst emergency situations.” At UNC GA, Atkins helps develop and articulate policy for the 16-campus University system. He has more than 10 years of experience in managing a range of academic and student development programs in comprehensive universities and nonprofit organizations. Atkins currently serves on the UNC task force studying campus emergency response. The NCSA alumni panel will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Main Theatre of the School of Filmmaking. The panel includes dance alumnus Robert Gosnell, drama alumnus Preston Lane, drama and dance alumnus Kelly Maxner, and dance and design & production alumna Kelly Swindell. They will discuss what kept them afloat as a student artist. Participants will eat lunch in the School’s Dining Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. From 1:30-4 p.m., the five arts schools and the Visual Arts Program will hold open houses and will give demonstrations for the Family Weekend attendees. And the high school academic faculty will conduct individual appointments beginning at 4 p.m. Throughout the rest of the evening and on Sunday, parents and family members are encouraged to attend an NCSA or community arts performance and spend time with their student-children. ###
