NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF THE ARTS
CHANCELLOR JOHN MAUCERI TO ANNOUNCE AND INTRODUCE
NEW FILMMAKING AND DANCE DEANS
AT NCSA CONVOCATION ON WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 12

WINSTON-SALEM – North Carolina School of the Arts Chancellor John Mauceri will announce and introduce the new dean of the School of Filmmaking* and the new dean designate of the School of Dance** at NCSA’s annual convocation, at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in Crawford Hall in Gray Building on the NCSA campus, 1533 South Main St., Winston-Salem.

The convocation, which is for the campus community only, also will have some special surprises!

An all-School picnic is slated to follow the student convocation in Daniels Plaza on campus.

New and returning college students will descend on the campus this weekend to move into their residence halls. All classes begin on Thursday, Sept. 13.

High school students – about a quarter of the student body – arrived in late August to begin academic classes.

About 1,160 students – both college and high school – are expected to enroll for the fall term at NCSA.

The convocation kicks the new school year into high gear, with a number of high-profile events slated. These include a tribute to outgoing Dance Dean Susan McCullough, on Oct. 15; a trip for seven students to perform in Vienna, where Chancellor Mauceri will be conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra; the observance of the 25th anniversary of the Roger L. Stevens Center, NCSA’s main performance venue; and a spring festival of the arts.

*The new film dean will replace Interim School of Filmmaking Dean David Elkins, who served for the 2006-07 year after long-time Dean Dale Pollock stepped down at the end of 2006. After taking a sabbatical to write a book, Pollock returned to the School of Filmmaking in early 2007 to teach as a faculty member.

**Susan McCullough served as dean of the School of Dance for 19 years before stepping down at the end of last year. She will return next year to the faculty to teach. NCSA Chancellor Emeritus Alex Ewing was recently appointed by Chancellor Mauceri to serve as interim dean of the School of Dance.

MEDIA: Both of the new deans will be in attendance, and biographical information will be available.
