WINSTON-SALEM – Wednesday marks the 50th anniversary of the
much-loved musical “West Side Story,” and National Public Radio
will commemorate the date with an hour-long documentary as part of its
popular segment “All Things Considered.”
North Carolina School of the Arts Chancellor John Mauceri and NCSA School of Drama Dean Gerald Freedman were interviewed for the documentary this spring. Freedman directed and Mauceri was the musical director for NCSA’s new production of “West Side Story,” which played at the Roger L. Stevens Center in Winston-Salem in May 2007 and at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago in June 2007. |

Freedman was
the assistant director of the original 1957 Broadway production (as
conceived by Jerome Robbins) and co-director of the 1980 Broadway
revival. As part of the team that created the original Broadway
production, Freedman worked closely with “West Side Story” producer
Harold Prince, author Arthur Laurents, composer Leonard Bernstein,
lyricist Stephen Sondheim, and choreographer and director Robbins.
Mauceri worked closely with “West Side Story” composer Leonard Bernstein for 18 years – from 1972 until Bernstein’s death in 1990. At Bernstein’s request, Mauceri edited, supervised, and conducted numerous Bernstein works (many of them premieres) in the major capitals of the world, including New York, Los Angeles, Washington, London, Milan and Tel Aviv. “All Things Considered” airs locally on WFDD 88.5 FM, the National Public Radio station at Wake Forest University, from 4-6:30 p.m. weekdays.
