WINSTON-SALEM – The A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute and the School of Design and Production of the North Carolina School of the Arts will present a behind the scenes look at the School’s upcoming production of Kurt Weill’s American Opera Street Scene at 7 p.m. Monday, April 28, in Watson Hall on the NCSA campus, 1533 South Main St., Winston-Salem. Admission is free. The April 28 “behind the scenes” event will include a panel discussion featuring NCSA alumnus Michael Shell, guest director; NCSA faculty member James Allbritten, conductor; and NCSA Chancellor John Mauceri, a renowned Weill expert. Mauceri is a member of the advisory board of the Kurt Weill Edition and has conducted Street Scene for New York City Opera (televised on “Live from Lincoln Center”), and the first U.K. production (Scottish Opera). |

Also on the panel will be School of Design and Production students: Tzuen Yap of Singapore, set designer; Janell Short of Winston-Salem, costume designer; Alex Fogel of Verona, N.J., lighting designer; and Lindsey Ewing of Lewisville, wig and makeup designer. Allbritten, who is artistic director of the Fletcher Opera Institute, will also moderate the panel discussion. A reception for the audience will follow in the Watson Hall lobby. Street Scene will be performed May 8-10 at 8 p.m. and May 11 at 2 p.m. in Agnes de Mille Theatre at NCSA. Admission is $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. An arts conservatory of international renown, the North Carolina School of the Arts was the first state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. Established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963, NCSA became part of the University of North Carolina in 1972. More than 1,100 students from middle school through graduate school train for careers in the arts in five professional schools: Dance, Design and Production (including a Visual Arts Program), Drama, Filmmaking, and Music.
