BALM IN GILEAD PLAYS AT NCSA MARCH 5-9

WINSTON-SALEM -- Balm in Gilead, the first full-length play by acclaimed playwright Lanford Wilson, opens at the North Carolina School of the Arts on March 5.

Balm in Gilead will be performed at 8 p.m. March 5-8 and at 2 p.m. March 8-9 in the Catawba Theatre of Performance Place on the NCSA campus, 1533 South Main St., Winston-Salem. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. For more information or to order tickets, call the NCSA Box Office at (336) 721-1945 or visit www.ncarts.edu/performances.

Frank’s Diner, a New York City dive, plays host to an eclectic ensemble of down-on-their-luck characters trying to get by in a harsh world. The play loosely centers on Joe, a cynical drug dealer, and Darlene, a naïve new arrival to the city. Joe attempts to help Darlene adjust to her new surroundings, which in turn might provide him with a chance at a fresh start, but his dark past threatens to destroy him before that can happen.

At the helm, Laura Henry returns to NCSA after directing Trelawny of the 'Wells' last winter. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Henry is a faculty member at the Gately/Poole Acting Studio in New York, and founder of her own LA-based acting studio in 1992. Henry has also performed in numerous film, television, and theatrical productions.

Playwright Lanford Wilson, a founding member of the Circle Repertory Company, has received numerous awards including the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and the Obie Award for his play Hot L Baltimore, and the Pulitzer Prize for Talley’s Folly.

The North Carolina School of the Arts was the first state-supported, residential performing arts school in the nation. Today, it is a leading conservatory of international renown, offering professional training for careers in the performing, visual, and moving image arts.
