THE DEVIL AND KATE
7 p.m. Monday, Jan.14, 2008, in Watson Hall

WINSTON-SALEM – The Associates and the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute of the North Carolina School of the Arts will present a behind the scenes look at the institute’s upcoming comic opera, Antonin Dvořák’s The Devil and Kate, at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, in Watson Chamber Music Hall on the NCSA campus, 1533 South Main St., Winston-Salem. Admission is free.

The Devil and Kate will be performed at NCSA’s Stevens Center in Winston-Salem Jan. 30, and Feb. 1 and 3, and at the Fletcher Opera Theater at Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh on Feb. 8 and 10.

The “behind the scenes” event will feature a panel discussion with the creative minds behind the production, from the lighting designer to the stage director. They will offer insights into bringing this seldom-performed 19th-century opera to the stage.

Participants will include: NCSA School of Music Dean Thomas Clark, who also is executive director of the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute; Steven LaCosse, stage director (and managing director of the institute); Angela Vanstory Ward, pianist (and vocal and diction coach for the institute); Kathryn Veillette, scenic designer; Matthew Smart, costume designer; Sam Kitchel, lighting designer; and Kelsey Contois, wig and makeup designer. (Veillette, Smart, Kitchel and Contois are students in the NCSA School of Design and Production.) The panel moderator will be James Allbritten, music director (and artistic director of the Fletcher Opera Institute).

An arts conservatory of international renown, the North Carolina School of the Arts was the first state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. Established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963, NCSA became part of the University of North Carolina in 1972. More than 1,100 students from middle school through graduate school train for careers in the arts in five professional schools: Dance, Design and Production (including a Visual Arts Program), Drama, Filmmaking, and Music.
