LAUREN RIETH NAMED OUTSTANDING TEACHER IN THE ARTS
BY NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF THE ARTS


WINSTON-SALEM Lauren Rieth of Troutman, N.C., has been named “Outstanding Teacher in the Arts” by the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Rieth received her award at the School’s annual commencement ceremony, held May 31 at the Stevens Center in Winston-Salem. She was presented her award by Greg Shelnutt, director of the Visual Arts Program in the North Carolina School of the Arts School of Design and Production.

Lauren Rieth took her art training at The Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Capital University in Cleveland, Ohio. Rieth worked for 15 years as a radio newscaster in Cleveland but longed to return to the arts. She earned her teaching certificate at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio, then moved in 2000 to North Carolina, where she teaches Visual Arts at Davie County High School in Mocksville. She has also taught at Statesville Middle School.

Her paintings and pottery have been part of a group exhibition at the Brock Center for the Performing Arts in Mocksville, while her paintings have been a solo exhibition at The Statesville Train Depot, at Capital University in Cleveland and at Loudoun County Administration Building in Leesburg, Va. She also had a solo exhibition of her interactive sculpture at the Corcoran Museum of Art in Washington, and her performance art was seen at Cleveland State University.

The North Carolina School of the Arts was the first state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation.  Established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963, the School of the Arts opened in Winston-Salem in 1965 and became part of the University of North Carolina in 1972.  More than 1,100 students from middle school through graduate school train for careers in the arts in five professional schools:  Dance, Design and Production (including a Visual Arts Program), Drama, Filmmaking and Music.  For more information about NCSA, visit www.ncarts.edu.
