LOS ANGELES – University of North Carolina School of the
Arts Chancellor John Mauceri was reunited recently with
his Hollywood Bowl Orchestra for the first time in two
years as the surprise opening for The Walt Disney Co.’s
showcase of its upcoming film projects.
The “rollout,” as it is called, drew some 2,500 top industry executives from all over the world to the Kodak Theatre, home of the Oscars, in Los Angeles. Maestro Mauceri conducted a special half hour orchestral work of Disney music, including themes from such films as PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, ENCHANTED, SNOW WHITE, PETER PAN, PEARL HARBOR, THE LITTLE MERMAID and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST – all synchronized to a cinematic montage. The daylong presentation on Sept. 24, hosted by Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook, continued with appearances by such stars as Miley Cyrus, Jim Carrey, Dr. John, Johnny Depp, Robin Williams, and John Travolta (pictured with Mauceri, above). Maestro Mauceri is the founding director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, which he conducted for 16 seasons before becoming chancellor of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) in 2006. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is the first state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. Established as the North Carolina School of the Arts by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963, UNCSA opened in Winston-Salem (“The City of the Arts”) in 1965 and became part of the University of North Carolina system in 1972. More than 1,100 students from middle school through graduate school train for careers in the arts in five professional schools: Dance, Design and Production (including a Visual Arts Program), Drama, Filmmaking, and Music. UNCSA is the state’s only public arts conservatory, dedicated entirely to the professional training of talented students in the performing, visual and moving image arts.
