UNCSA AND WINSTON-SALEM SYMPHONY TO PRESENT
“THE NUTCRACKER”

Relive the Magic Dec. 6-14, 2008

WINSTON-SALEM – Remember seeing The Nutcracker for the first time as a child? The Christmas tree grew to be bigger than you could imagine. The magical journey to the Kingdom of Sweets was nothing short of a dream.  And the battle between the Mouse King and the daring Nutcracker–a little scary but in such a delightful way.

This year marks the 26th anniversary of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) and the Winston-Salem Symphony production of The Nutcracker at the Stevens Center, although this Piedmont Triad tradition dates back more than four decades, including performances at Reynolds Auditorium.  The Triad’s only production of The Nutcracker with live music, the 2008 performances of this holiday classic promise to be more magical than ever.

Featuring choreography by Robert Lindgren and Sonja Tyven, based on the choreography of Lev Ivanov, The Nutcracker ballet will again bring sugar plum dreams to life through dance, music and magic for 10 performances at the Stevens Center in downtown Winston-Salem.

Ethan Stiefel, one of the world’s premier ballet dancers and the new Dean of Dance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, is adding his unique expertise to this year’s production. Stiefel will be working in collaboration with the show’s creator Robert Lindgren in coaching the individual soloists and the pas de deux in The Nutcracker, providing them the opportunity to study with the internationally renowned ballet dancer.

Two performances will star American Ballet Theatre’s Gillian Murphy, Principal Dancer, and Blaine Hoven, Corps de Ballet, both alumni of the UNCSA School of Dance. They will be performing as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Her Cavalier Saturday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m.

The full performance schedule for The Nutcracker is: December 6 and 7 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; December 11 through 14 at 7:30 p.m.; and December 13 and 14 at 2 p.m.  Tickets are available at the UNCSA Box Office at the Stevens Center or on campus at Watson Hall, by calling 336.721.1945, or online at www.uncsa.edu.  For the first time, special premium seating also is available for The Nutcracker.

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is the first state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. Established as the North Carolina School of the Arts by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963, UNCSA opened in Winston-Salem (“The City of the Arts”) in 1965 and became part of the University of North Carolina system in 1972. More than 1,100 students from middle school through graduate school train for careers in the arts in five professional schools: Dance, Design and Production (including a Visual Arts Program), Drama, Filmmaking, and Music. UNCSA is the state’s only public arts conservatory, dedicated entirely to the professional training of talented students in the performing, visual and moving image arts. For more information, visit www.uncsa.edu.
