KEVIN REYNOLDS, DIRECTOR OF THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO,

TO VISIT NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

School of Filmmaking Also Attracting Other Guest Artists

 Feb. 1, 2002

WINSTON-SALEM – Kevin Reynolds, director of the current big-screen epic THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, will be a guest artist in the School of Filmmaking at the North Carolina School of the Arts on Friday, Feb. 8.

Reynolds, who is making his second visit to NCSA, will conduct seminars for directing and screenwriting students during the day. That evening, he will screen his newest endeavor for film students, followed by a question-and-answer session moderated by NCSA School of Filmmaking Dean Dale Pollock.

Pollock worked with Reynolds on the 1988 film THE BEAST, a drama about a Russian tank crew in Afghanistan. Reynolds directed that highly rated film, which was among those produced by Pollock when he was with A & M Films.

MONTE CRISTO, Reynolds’ newest film, opened in theatres across the country on Jan. 25. This latest film adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas novel was called “a refreshing piece of old-style entertainment” and “hard to resist” by The New York Times. “And just as Dumas’ works have served to introduce generations of readers to the pleasures of literature … so will this stolid, unpretentious, thoroughly competent film remind jaded viewers of the sumptuous delight the movies can offer,” said Times reviewer A.O. Scott.

Reynolds is perhaps best-known as director of the Kevin Costner epics WATERWORLD (1995) and ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES (1991). In addition, his credits include RAPA NUI, starring Jason Scott Lee, and ONE EIGHT SEVEN, starring Samuel L. Jackson.

Reynolds attended film school at the University of Southern California, where he wrote and directed PROOF. After seeing the film, Steven Spielberg commissioned him to write and direct his first feature, FANDANGO (1985), which starred Kevin Costner. A screenplay Reynolds wrote while in school, TEN SOLDIERS, went on to become the 1984 film RED DAWN, directed by John Milius and starring Patrick Swayze.

On Friday, Feb. 15, producer Pierre David will visit the NCSA School of Filmmaking to work with producing students and conduct a seminar on international film financing. David’s films include INTERNAL AFFAIRS with Richard Gere and DEEP COVER with Laurence Fishburne. NCSA School of Filmmaking faculty member Ron Stacker Thompson was associate producer for DEEP COVER.

Other recent guest artists in the film school have included writer-director Emily Liu (WOMAN SOUP, KANGAROO MAN) and editor William Gordean (LEGEND, DRAGNET and LEGAL EAGLES).

Media: Please note that the film screening and workshops are not open to the public. Reynolds and David are expected to have some time available for interviews. If you are interested, please contact Marla Carpenter at 336-770-3337 in the public relations office at NCSA.
