 UNC-TV TO AIR NCSA FILMS ON “NORTH CAROLINA VISIONS”


WINSTON-SALEM – The eighth season of “North Carolina Visions” will kick off this Saturday, Sept. 14, on University of North Carolina Television (UNC-TV). Five of the 17 films selected to be shown were made by students at the North Carolina School of the Arts School of Filmmaking.

A total of 56 works were submitted, according to UNC-TV.

“North Carolina Visions,” the state’s only small-screen showcase for North Carolina independent films, will air for six consecutive Saturdays beginning Sept. 14 at 11 p.m.

The new season includes the following NCSA student films, listed chronologically:

* Sept. 14 – NEWTON (Experimental – 14 minutes)
This documentary-style film explores Sir Isaac Newton’s Laws of Motion and their potential to veer toward chaos. Directed and co-written by Peter Sattler ’01.

* Oct. 5 – BROKEN DOLL (Narrative – 14 minutes, 22 seconds)
This short dramatic narrative is a futuristic saga following an adolescent girl living with a robotic arm.  Struggling inside her tortured family existence, the young girl attempts to overcome her suppressed affections and father’s abuses in order to take control of her own life. Directed by Landis Stokes ’02.

* Oct. 19 – GET OUTTA HERE (Narrative – 19 minutes, 50 seconds)
A newly married couple sees a popular game show as their ticket out of their mother-in-law’s house and on to a life of their own. This short comedy begs the question: What are you going to do when you have more answers than questions? Written and directed by Tony Shaff ’01.

* Oct. 19 – MAKING FRIENDS (Animation – 3 minutes, 30 seconds)
This 3-D computer-animated short tells the story of Eric the Snowman, who is abandoned by the very boy who made him. As the spring sun begins to warm, Eric is forced to leave his creator and travel north in search of colder climates. There, Eric finds only cold loneliness until inspiration strikes. Written and directed by Andrew Peers ’01.

* Oct. 19 – NOBLE CHROME PIRATES (Narrative – 19 minutes)
Five friends piece together their dream machine out of stolen car parts. Once finished, they come to find that the very thing that brought them all together is now the one thing that is tearing them apart. Written and directed by Jeff Nichols ’01.

Two of these NCSA films, NEWTON and GET OUTTA HERE, were nominated for 2002 Student Academy Awards – the most prestigious award in the student film field.

GET OUTTA HERE also won the Second Place Grand Jury Award at the Cape Fear Independent Film Festival, and honorable mentions at the Valleyfest Film Festival in Knoxville, Tenn., and the University of Northern Alabama George Lindsey Film Festival.

Also at the George Lindsey festival, NOBLE CHROME PIRATES took the Student Best of Show Award and the Golden Lion Award for best student narrative short. And MAKING FRIENDS won the Director’s Choice Award at the Cape Fear festival.

Established at the North Carolina School of the Arts in 1993, the School of Filmmaking now enrolls more than 200 students annually.
