WINSTON-SALEM – Dmitri Vorobiev, an alumnus of and member of the accompanying staff at the North Carolina School of the Arts, won first place in the recent 15th New Orleans International Piano Competition. Vorobiev received $15,000 and performance opportunities with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the Acadiana Symphony and the Baton Rouge Symphony. The second-place winner, Hsiang Tu of Taiwan, received $6,000, while the third-place winner, Spencer Myer of the United States, received $3,000. The Musical Arts Society of New Orleans, which presents the annual competition, selected 12 semifinalists from a record number 145 applications from around the world. After five days of competition, the three finalists were selected. The competition was held at Loyola University. A native of Moscow, Vorobiev began his piano studies when he was 5. He attended the Moscow State Conservatory, where he studied with Nina Levitzkaya and Victor Bunin. In 1992, he was invited by Eric Larsen to study at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Vorobiev received his Bachelor of Music from NCSA in 1996, and went on to receive his master’s degree in 1998 from the Manhattan School of Music, where he was a student of Marc Silverman. Vorobiev first came to international attention after winning the Casagrande International Piano Competition in Italy in 1994. He has also been a major prize-winner in the Busoni, Cincinnati World, Ibla Grand Prize, A.M.A. Calabria and Alabama piano competitions. In 2000, he placed first and took three special prizes at the UNISA International Piano Competition in Pretoria, South Africa. Vorobiev has performed with the Winston-Salem Symphony and the Western Piedmont Symphony locally and has appeared in solo recitals throughout the United States, Russia, Israel, Ireland and Italy.
