WINSTON-SALEM – Alumni of the North Carolina School of the Arts represented their alma mater well at the recent Sundance Film Festival, held Jan. 16-26 in Park City, Utah. Four films in competition were directed, filmed or edited by NCSA School of Filmmaking alumni. A fifth film in competition was written and directed by an NCSA School of Drama alumnus. David Gordon Green's ALL THE REAL GIRLS won a Special Jury Prize for Emotional Truth in the Dramatic Competition at Sundance. Green is an NCSA film alumnus who received unprecedented critical reviews for his debut film GEORGE WASHINGTON in 2000. Richard Corliss of Time magazine recently called him “America’s most gifted auteur.” Much of ALL THE REAL GIRLS was shot in the Asheville, N.C., area, with other NCSA film alumni: Tim Orr was the director of photography, while Steven Gonzales and Zene Baker worked as editors on the film. In addition, the film stars NCSA film alumnus Paul Schneider. It is being distributed by Sony Pictures Classics and was released on Valentine’s Day. NCSA alumnus Tim Orr was the cinematographer for Peter Sollett's RAISING VICTOR VARGAS, which was in the American Showcase. (Orr was also the director of photography on Green's GEORGE WASHINGTON.) NCSA alumnus Steven Gonzales edited Sarah Rogacki's RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS, which was in the Dramatic Competition. NCSA alumnus Zene Baker edited Neema Barnette's CIVIL BRAND, which was in the American Spectrum category. Green, Orr, Gonzales, Baker and Schneider all graduated from the NCSA School of Filmmaking in 1998. A contender in Sundance’s Dramatic Competition, PIECES OF APRIL was written and directed by NCSA School of Drama alumnus Peter Hedges '84. The film was later sold for $3.5 million to United Artists. Hedges is well known as a novelist, playwright and screenwriter. Most recently he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for ABOUT A BOY. The Sundance Film Festival is an exhibition of work that showcases the best of independent cinema. The Film Festival programming staff views more than 3,000 submissions each year to select approximately 125 feature-length documentary and dramatic films and 60 shorts.
