MEDIA REMINDER:

TONY NOMINEE TWYLA THARP TO SPEAK AT NCSA’s COMMENCEMENT

Saturday, May 31, at the Stevens Center

WINSTON-SALEM – We’ve seen her with pop music icon Billy Joel. With dance legend Mikhail Baryshnikov. With Oscar-winning director Milos Forman.

Now’s your chance to see her in person.

Choreographer and director Twyla Tharp will be the speaker for the North Carolina School of the Arts’ 38th commencement on May 31. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. at NCSA’s Stevens Center in downtown Winston-Salem. Approximately 285 college and high school students are expected to graduate with degrees, diplomas and certificates in dance, design & production, drama, filmmaking, music, and visual arts.

With her hit musical with Billy Joel, “Movin’ Out,” playing to enthusiastic crowds on Broadway, Tharp will visit NCSA only days before she learns just how many Tony Awards she will take home. The groundbreaking musical has been nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography.

NCSA School of Dance alumnus Keith Roberts is one of those nominations – for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Three other NCSA dance alumni are also in “Movin’ Out.”

MEDIA: Because of limited seating, the NCSA commencement is not open to the public, and family and friends of graduating students must have tickets to enter the Stevens Center. However, there are a limited number of tickets available for media representatives. Please call 336-770-3337 by May 29 if you are interested in attending.
