BROADWAY, FILM, TV AND RECORDING STAR MANDY PATINKIN
TO BE GUEST ARTIST AT NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

WINSTON-SALEM – Tony and Emmy Award-winner Mandy Patinkin will return to the North Carolina School of the Arts next week as a guest artist in the School of Drama.

A star of Broadway, film and television, Patinkin is also a concert and recording artist. He is currently starring in the Showtime original series “Dead Like Me,” which has just completed its first season and is scheduled to go into production for its second season early in 2004.

Patinkin, who was the 2001 commencement speaker at and received an honorary doctorate from NCSA, will work with college juniors and seniors on acting and musical theatre presentation, Dec. 1-6. That is the first week of “Intensive Arts,” a two-week period celebrated annually at NCSA. Students work on arts projects and participate in workshops and master classes within their arts area, as well as interdisciplinary projects.

NCSA School of Drama Dean Gerald Freedman, who taught Patinkin at The Juilliard School and has been a mentor to him for many years, brought Patinkin back to NCSA for this visit. “Mandy from his student days was a risk-taker; daring, original and unafraid,” Freedman said about Patinkin. “He was, and remains, passionate about his art, his family, and his social responsibility.”

Mandy Patinkin made his Broadway debut in 1980. He won a Tony Award for his role as Che in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Evita” and was nominated for his starring role in the musical “Sunday in the Park with George.” In 1991, he returned to Broadway in the Tony Award-winning musical “The Secret Garden.” In 1992 he appeared as Marvin in “Falsettos” and in 1997 played a sold-out engagement of his one-man concert. His stage credits also include “The Wild Party,” for which he was nominated for yet another Tony.

His feature film credits include THE PRINCESS BRIDE, YENTL, THE MUSIC OF CHANCE, DANIEL, RAGTIME, THE DOCTOR, ALIEN NATION, DICK TRACY, TRUE COLORS, and PINERO. Patinkin won an Emmy Award in 1995 for his critically acclaimed performance in the CBS series “Chicago Hope.”

In 1989, Patinkin began his concert career at Joseph Papp’s Public Theater. This coincided with the release of his first solo album, entitled “Mandy Patinkin.” Since then he has continued to tour extensively, appearing to sold-out audiences across the United States, Canada and in London. His recordings also include “Mandy Patinkin In Concert: Dress Casual,” “Experiment,” “Oscar & Steve,” “Leonard Bernstein’s New York,” “Mamaloshen,” and “Kidults.”
