WINSTON-SALEM – Mary-Louise Parker, an alumna of the School of Drama at the North Carolina School of the Arts, will be among the performers recognized at this year's Emmy Awards, to be televised by ABC from Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium on Sept. 19. Parker was nominated for an Emmy Award in July. She was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for her role as Harper Pitt in the HBO film ANGELS IN AMERICA, which also was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries. Parker, who won a Golden Globe earlier this year for the same role, co-stars with Al Pacino and Meryl Streep in the HBO movie version of Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning, two-part play, “Angels in America.” Parker also has a recurring role on “The West Wing,” which was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series this year. She was also nominated for an Emmy Award in 2002 for that role. A native of South Carolina who also lived in Texas, Parker graduated from NCSA with a College Arts Diploma in 1986. Her feature film credits include THE RED DRAGON, THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY, THE CLIENT, MR. WONDERFUL, GRAND CANYON and FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, among others. She won a Best Actress Tony Award for her role as Catherine in “Proof” in 2001. In addition to Parker, other NCSA alumni are in other Emmy-nominated productions. They include School of Drama alumnus Chris Parnell, a cast member of “Saturday Night Live,” which is nominated for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series, and School of Dance alumnus Jerome Johnson, a Winston-Salem native who is among NCSA alumni featured in “Lincoln Center Celebrates Balanchine’s 100” with the New York City Ballet on PBS, which was nominated for Outstanding Special Class Program.
