NEW YORK MAGAZINE LISTS TWO NCSA ALUMNI AMONG
“THIS YEAR’S BEST”

WINSTON-SALEM – Two North Carolina School of the Arts alumni have shown up on NEW YORK magazine’s list of “This Year’s Best/The Cultural Elite 2005,” currently seen in this week’s (Dec. 19) issue.

David LaChapelle’s documentary RIZE was named “Best Art-House Movie,” while Mary-Louise Parker came in second on the “Best TV Actress” list for her role in Showtime’s “Weeds,” which also came in second in the “Best TV Comedy” category.

Only three awards were given per category. In addition to TV and movies, the magazine also ranked theatre, classical music and dance, books, art, and pop music.

LaChapelle, who studied in the NCSA Visual Arts Program, visited his alma mater just two weeks ago, when he was a guest artist in the NCSA School of Filmmaking.

Recently selected as the 48th Grammy Awards’ official artist, David LaChapelle has been ranked among the 10 most important people in photography in the world by American Photo. His photos have appeared on the covers of “Vanity Fair,” “Rolling Stone,” and “Vibe.” His books include portraits of celebrities such as Madonna, Drew Barrymore and Leonardo DiCaprio. He has shot album covers for the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Mariah Carey, and Lil Kim. His foray into film has produced music videos for Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Macy Gray, Elton John, Christina Aguilera and more. His latest effort, RIZE, a documentary about krumping – a dance phenomenon that’s exploding on the streets in South Central LA – has won kudos from “Variety” to “The Wall Street Journal.”

Parker, a native of South Carolina who also lived in Texas, studied acting in the NCSA School of Drama.

Recently nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy (also for her role in “Weeds”), Mary-Louise Parker won a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award in 2004 for her performance in HBO’s “Angels in America.” Her feature film credits include THE RED DRAGON, THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY, THE CLIENT, MR. WONDERFUL, GRAND CANYON and FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, among others. Her other awards include a Best Actress Tony for her role as Catherine in “Proof” in 2001.

In addition, Winston-Salem native Phil Morrison was named “Best New New York Director” for his work on JUNEBUG – which was written by NCSA School of Drama alumnus Angus MacLachlan.
