NCSA DANCE ALUMNI CONTINUE TO WIN NATIONAL RECOGNITION

WINSTON-SALEM – Alumni of the School of Dance at the North Carolina School of the Arts continue to win national recognition.

Gillian Murphy ’96, principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, appears on the cover of Pointe magazine’s June/July 2005 issue. The cover, on which she wears a custom tutu designed by Erin Walsh for the magazine’s fifth annual tutu issue, is for a story titled “A Star is Born / American Ballet Theatre principal Gillian Murphy is primed for prima.” NCSA School of Dance faculty member Melissa Hayden was interviewed for the story.

Murphy will be coming to living rooms across America when PBS presents ABT’s “Swan Lake” to celebrate 30 years of “Dance in America” on “Great Performances.” Murphy stars as Odette/Odile. University of North Carolina Television will broadcast the program at 9 p.m. June 20.  Murphy is a native of England who moved to South Carolina at age 5.

In the same issue of Pointe magazine, Amy Aldridge ’94, principal dancer with Pennsylvania Ballet, is featured in a full-page ad for Discount Dance Supply. (Gillian Murphy is often featured in ads for Gaynor Minden pointe shoes.)

Trey McIntyre ’87 is referred to by The New York Times’ Jennifer Dunning as “one of ballet’s most surprising talents” in a May 1 preview of his new Trey McIntyre Project, which is appearing at various festivals this summer. McIntyre was featured in the April issue of Dance Magazine, in an article titled “Lassoing the Moon,” in which 15 top choreographers describe their choreographic processes.

In that same issue of Dance Magazine, Sara Hook ’80/’84 was interviewed for an article titled “Can Choreography Be Taught … Ask 5 Teachers and You’ll Get Five Answers.” Hook is an associate professor in the Department of Dance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
