 NCSA DESIGN AND PRODUCTION STUDENT WINS FIRST PLACE
AT SOUTHEASTERN THEATRE CONFERENCE COMPETITION

WINSTON-SALEM – North Carolina School of the Arts student Travis McHale of Winston-Salem won the ETC Lighting Design Award this past weekend at the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Greensboro.  

The award, sponsored by Electronic Theatre Controls Inc., is for first place in the Undergraduate Lighting Design competition. It carries a cash award. 

Based in Middleton, Wisc., ETC is a world leader in award-winning entertainment and architectural lighting equipment. 

A college senior studying lighting design in the School of Design and Production at NCSA, McHale is a student of Norman Coates. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael McHale of San Pedro, Calif.

For his entry, McHale provided a light plot and paperwork, cue descriptions, follow spot tracking, a concept statement and production photos for “A Man of No Importance,” which was produced at NCSA Feb. 17-26.  

The competition adjudicator was F. Mitchell Dana, one of the nation’s preeminent lighting designers.  

The Southeastern Theatre Conference is the country’s largest and most active regional theatre association. It was founded in 1949 in Chapel Hill. The 55th conference, held March 2-6 at the Koury Convention Center, included festivals, showcases, workshops, speakers, auditions, and career discussions.

An arts conservatory of international renown, the North Carolina School of the Arts was the first state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. Established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963, NCSA became part of the University of North Carolina in 1972. More than 1,000 students from middle school through graduate school train for careers in the arts in five professional schools: Dance, Design and Production (including a Visual Arts Program), Drama, Filmmaking, and Music.
