NCSA DRAMA ALUMNA MARY-LOUISE PARKER WINS
SECOND GOLDEN GLOBE
NCSA Music Faculty Member John Ellis Featured on
MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA Soundtrack, Which Wins Best Score


WINSTON-SALEM – North Carolina School of the Arts alumna Mary-Louise Parker has won her second Golden Globe – this time, for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for her role as Nancy Botwin in the Showtime series “Weeds.”  

Parker beat out four of the actresses from ABC’s “Desperate Housewives”: Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman and Eva Longoria. 

Parker won a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award in 2004 for her performance in HBO’s “Angels in America.” A native of South Carolina who also lived in Texas, Parker graduated from NCSA with a College Arts Diploma in 1986. She studied acting in the School of Drama.

Most recently seen in ROMANCE & CIGARETTES, she just finished shooting THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD. Her other feature film credits include RED DRAGON, THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY, THE CLIENT, MR. WONDERFUL, GRAND CANYON and FRIED GREEN TOMATOES.

Her other awards include a Best Actress Tony Award for her role as Catherine in “Proof” in 2001. 

In addition, NCSA School of Music faculty member John Ellis did the oboe work on the soundtrack for MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, which won Best Original Score for composer John Williams. Ellis was part of a trio on the soundtrack, with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman.  

Ellis also performs on the MUNICH soundtrack, another John Williams’ score, and the upcoming BAMBI II DVD, a Bruce Broughton score.  

Ellis has been principal oboe with the orchestras of 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, Columbia Studios and RCA, as well as the Beverly Hills Symphony, the Pasadena Symphony, and Ojai Festival Orchestra. He has recorded with Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, John Denver and The Carpenters. He is a member of the Winston-Salem Symphony and the Clarion Wind Quintet.
