Ragtime Revue by the NCSA American Music Ensemble

Bright and brassy or smooth and dark, Ragtime is the first truly American musical genre. The NCSA American Music Ensemble, directed by Mark Norman, presents four evening performances of blues, jazz, rags and brass. Hear the stars of tomorrow, today. Tap your feet to the Dixieland beat in the timeless classics by Scott Joplin, Dizzy Gillespie and other American greats.

Escape the midday heat and enjoy a light classical program showcasing the talent of the NCSA American Music Ensemble. Under the direction of Mark Norman, these gifted musicians perform solos, duets and small ensemble pieces for strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and keyboard. A musical treat for the entire family!

Dixie Rocks the Boat!

Manteo Waterfront across from the Elizabeth II
Relax on the Manteo waterfront as musicians from the NCSA American Music Ensemble serenade you from the deck of the Elizabeth II. Tonight’s half-hour program will feature blues, jazz, rags, and brass.  Join us at 8 pm for the full evening concert at Festival Park’s newly renovated Outdoor Pavilion!  Wednesdays are truly wild and wonderful at Roanoke Island Festival Park!  

Zoostrumentals: Classics for Kids featuring an Instrument Petting Zoo
June 26

Lions, tigers, and bears - Oh, No! Our zoo is filled with instruments – violins, clarinets, drums, and flutes - just to mention a few.  NCSA’s talented musicians introduce children in the audience to their favorite “animal” and invite them onstage to “pet the instruments”.  The NCSA American Music Ensemble presents an hour of outrageous family fun. Don’t miss the first of six shows in NCSA’s new Classics for Kids series.

A string of Hollywood celebrities – including Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, Reba McIntyre, Jennifer Garner, Kathy Bates and Robert Redford – give voice to E.B. White’s beloved barnyard characters in this classic children’s tale. Jordan Kerner, NCSA’s Dean of the School of Filmmaking, produced this new release of a heartwarming family classic. Join us for Charlotte’s Web on the big outdoor screen!

Performing to record audiences last summer, the NCSA Jazz Ensemble and Friends directed by Ron Rudkin returns to the Outer Banks!  Back by popular demand, the award-winning NCSA jazz band and NYC jazz singer, Becca Stevens, perform spectacular American and Latin jazz. Come swing every night to the full festival repertoire of big band to contemporary jazz tunes!

Rockin’ with Mozart: Classics for Kids

Elvis may have left the building, but we have someone even better - Mozart! Join us as Mozart leads an hour long journey through the world of classical music; fun, kid-focused music. Audience participation strongly recommended! You won’t want to miss any of NCSA’s new Classics for Kids series.

Happy Birthday, America! Don’t miss this spectacular July 4th tradition on the Outer Banks! Roanoke Island Festival Park, the Town of Manteo, and NCSA invite you to honor our nation’s independence and freedom with an evening of patriotic music and dazzling fireworks. NCSA’s Jazz Ensemble and Friends, featuring vocalist Becca Stevens,  and members of the NCSA American Music Ensemble join together to present an evening of patriotic melodies. Join us as we salute “the land of the free and the home of the brave”. Bring your families and friends and come early to picnic at the park before the celebration.

Considered one of Charlie Chaplin’s best films, The Kid tells the story of a young boy (Jackie Coogan in his film debut) abandoned by his mother and cared for by The Tramp (Chaplin). One of the most heart-wrenching scenes ever included in a comedy follows when the mother has a change of heart and circumstances, finds her son and takes him from The Tramp. The Kid is good for many laughs and perhaps a tear.

Rats that can tap dance! An unscrupulous mayor! Can the Pied Piper save the town? NCSA’s School of Drama proudly presents the North Carolina debut of this delightful family musical.  The Pied Piper is hip; the rock music, cool; the rats, hilarious; the kids, precocious; and the lyrics, powerful!  This fun-filled musical was written and directed by Gerald Freedman, Broadway Producer and Dean of NCSA’s School of Drama. Will you follow the Pied Piper? To begin you must Take One Step! TIP: Pack a picnic and a camera and come early for pre-show entertainment by the cast.

What do silent movies, slapstick comedy, and Shakespeare have in common? To find out, join director Matt Bulluck and his hand-picked cast from the School of Drama as they perform The Comedy of Errors, a hilarious Shakespeare tale of lost twins and mistaken identity - told with a twist!  Only four performances, so mark your calendars now to see these Broadway-bound performers before they leave Manteo!  TIP: Pack a picnic and a camera and come early for pre-show entertainment by the cast! 

Summer Saxophones by the NCSA Saxophone Quartet

Escape the midday heat and feel the beat as four superb saxophonists take the stage!  The NCSA Saxophone Quartet mixes French and American standards with classical and ragtime arrangements in a concert to delight young and old alike! Programs vary so plan to join us both days!

The Pied Piper Steps Indoors

Will the tap-dancing rats take over our town? Can the Pied Piper save us? Sassy Saxophones: Classics for Kids

Do you know how many saxophones are in the Saxophone family? Who invented the saxophone? Enjoy a magical hour with the NCSA Saxophone Quartet. Meet these four sensational musicians to learn the answers to these questions, and many more. Kids of all ages will enjoy this afternoon of music for the young at heart! Journey beyond your imagination and enter a “breathtaking fantasy world” (Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times) filled with adventure, humor and heart. In Hayao Miyazaki’s animated masterpiece, Howl’s Moving Castle, Sophie finds her life thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome but mysterious wizard named Howl. In a life-changing adventure, Sophie climbs aboard Howl’s magnificent flying castle and enters a magical world. This special family film features the voices of Jean Simmons, Christian Bale, Lauren Bacall, Blythe Danner and Billy Crystal.

Join us for this musical reflection before heading off to the polls in November.

The North Carolina School of the Arts proudly presents an exceptional night showcasing some of the best family-friendly films by students of the School of Filmmaking. NCSA students start directing and shooting their first production in their first term. All Second, Third and Fourth Year productions are entered into film and video festivals worldwide. One of the most elegant and perfect romantic comedies ever made, The Cameraman tells the story of a tintype photographer (Buster Keaton) who falls in love with a pretty girl (Marceline Day) and decides he can win her over by becoming a newsreel cameraman. The film contains two scenes famous in film history: Keaton's famous, beautifully improvised one-man baseball game filmed at Yankee Stadium and the classic scene with Keaton and another man crammed into a changing booth, both trying to climb into swim suits. The Cameraman gives Keaton one of his best roles and he fills it with one of his most touching performances.

Innovative choreography, dynamic style, movement and expression; remarkable dance! The renowned dancers from NCSA perform classical and contemporary selections.  Again this year, NCSA’s School of Dance presents outstanding, prize-winning choreography by NCSA alums.  Join us for our final exciting week on the Outer Banks!  TIP: One week only!

Electrifying and energetic! Watch NCSA’s exciting percussion ensemble perform on a variety of instruments, steel drums to xylophones.  Drumsticks everywhere! Year after year, John Beck directs one of the summer festival’s most popular groups, the NCSA Percussion Ensemble.   Programs vary so plan to join us both days!

Finding Neverland on the big outdoor screen

Finding Neverland is a tale of magic and fantasy inspired by the life of James Barrie, the author of the children’s classic, Peter Pan. The film is a fictional account of Barrie’s creative journey to bring Peter Pan to life, from his first inspiration for the story to the play’s premiere at the Duke of York’s Theatre. Starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, Finding Neverland was nominated for seven Oscars and winner of Best Original Score.
