2008 Application Information

Students who wish to attend the North Carolina School of the Arts’ Summer Program must submit an application for admission and a non-refundable application fee of $60 (U.S. Residents/Permanent Residents) and $110 (International Applicants), payable to NCSA.  Applicants must submit all required documentation specified below in order to be considered for admissions. 

Dance Applicants:  please note that you must first audition before submitting an application to the Summer Program unless applying with an audition video.

General Information

Dance

1. Required age or grade: applicants must be at least 12 years of age and a rising 7th grader.

2. Dance Audition Requirements:
   
   Admission to the Summer Program in ballet and contemporary dance is by audition.  Audition Dates for the Summer Program and the Fall of 2008 can be found by clicking on this link. Applicants must pay a $20 audition fee at the time of the audition.  Applications are submitted after the live audition.
   
   

   Applicants in both ballet and contemporary will be led by the auditioner through a short class.  Applicants must wear practice clothes.  Hair must be worn up and applicants must not wear jewelry.  Females auditioning in ballet may be asked to do pointe work.

   Inclement weather may prohibit travel.  The North Carolina School of the Arts reserves the right to cancel and reschedule auditions.

3. Dance Audition Results:
   
   

   The dance faculty will give audition results to the students at the time of audition.  Students recommended for acceptance will be given an application that is to be completed in full and submitted to the Office of Admissions along with the application fee, payable by check or money order (no cash) of $60 (U.S. Residents/Permanent Residents) and $110 (International Applicants) to NCSA.

   
   

4. Submit
   1. A. The application and non-refundable application fee, payable by check or Money order (no cash) of $60 (U.S. Residents/Permanent Residents) and $110 (International Applicants) to NCSA.
   2. Two (2) letters of recommendation:
      • One letter from your present dance teacher;
      • One letter from an academic teacher or guidance counselor, indicating the student's maturity level.
   3. Two 5" x 7" photographs taken in practice attire.
      • Photograph 1:
        All applicants (Ballet and Contemporary) must submit one photograph facing front, pointe tendu in second position with arms in second;
      • Photograph 2, Ballet applicants:
        1. Female ballet applicants, one recent photograph taken in arabesque on pointe.
        2. Male ballet applicants one recent photograph taken in arabesque at the barre.
      • Photograph 2, Contemporary applicants:
        • One recent photograph taken in a contemporary dance pose of the applicant's choice showing an active line of movement in contemporary style training.
          
          
5. Dance Video Requirements:
   
   Students unable to attend an audition in their discipline (either ballet or contemporary) may submit a videotape. Videotapes (VHS format) must be received by the Office of Admissions by May 25, 2008 accompanied by the application and application fee to be considered. Applicants must wear practice clothes.
   
   

   Ballet applicants must include the following steps: at the barre — plié, port de bras,  tendu, tendu jeté, rond de jambé par terre, frappé, fondu, rond de jambe en l’air  decoté, développé, grand battement; in the center — tendu with épaulement, pirouette,  petite allegro, and grand allegro. A solo classical variation (on pointe for women),  one to two minutes in length, is also required.

   Contemporary applicants’ videotapes should begin with a short technical demonstration at the barre or center and include the following steps: plié, tendue/dégagé (straight and with plié from fifth), rond de jambe, passé développé (front, side, back), grand battement, and a balance on one leg.  Movements should be short but should demonstrate clarity of form and should not exceed five minutes. In   addition, a two to three minute self-choreographed solo must be performed to classical music, such as Bach, Mozart, and Copland.

Drama - 5 Week Program

1. Previous drama or acting experience is not essential.
   
   
2. Applicants must be at least 15 years of age and must have completed 9th grade.

1. Completed application (all required questions answered both on paper and electronic version), and non-refundable application fee ($60 for U.S. Residents/Permanent Residents and $110 for international applicants) payable by check or money order (no cash) to NCSA.
2. Two (2) letters of recommendation:
   
   1. One letter preferably from a dramatic arts teacher.
      
   2. One letter from an academic teacher or guidance counselor indicating the student’s maturity level.
3. One-page statement of why you wish to attend the Summer Program in Drama.

Drama – Stage Combat – 3-Week Session

Introduction to Stage Combat
Requirements:
Minimum age is 15 (must have completed 9th grade). Previous drama, acting
and/or stage combat experience is not essential.

Submit:
1.  Completed application (all required questions answered both on paper and electronic    
     version), and non-refundable application fee ($60 for U.S. Residents/Permanent  
     Residents and $110 for international applicants) payable by check or money order (no
     cash) to NCSA.

2.  High School: Two (2) letters of recommendation; one from a dramatic arts
     teacher and one from an academic teacher or guidance counselor indicating
     the student’s maturity level.

    College: One (1) letter of recommendation from either a dramatic arts teacher or
     theatre professional that supports the student’s desire and ability to pursue
     training in stage combat.

3.  A one-page statement of why you wish to attend the Summer Session
     in Stage Combat.

Actor Combatant Skills Proficiency
Requirements:
Minimum age is 18 (must have completed high school). Previous drama, acting
and/or stage combat experience is not essential.

Submit:
1.  Completed application (all required questions answered both on paper and electronic    
     version), and non-refundable application fee ($60 for U.S. Residents/Permanent  
     Residents and $110 for international applicants) payable by check or money order (no
     cash) to NCSA.
2.  College: One (1) letter of recommendation from either a dramatic arts
     teacher or theatre professional that supports the student’s desire
     and ability to pursue training in stage combat.

Filmmaking

Requirements:
Required grade level; rising 10th, 11th, 12th grade or rising collegefreshmen.

Submit:

1. Completed application (all required questions answered both on paper and electronic version), and non-refundable application fee ($60 for U.S. Residents/Permanent Residents and $110 for international applicants) payable by check or money order (no cash) to NCSA.
2. Two (2) letters of recommendation:
   • One letter preferably from an arts teacher, film/video and/or IBO film teacher..
   • One letter from an academic teacher or guidance counselor indicating the student’s maturity level.
3. A short essay on your expectations of the Summer Program in Filmmaking.

Music (Requirements are the same for the 5-week; 3-week; 2-week)

1. Required age or grade: Applicants must be at least 12 years of age, or a rising 7th grade student.
   
   
2. Submit:
   1. The application and non-refundable application fee, payable by check or money order (no cash) of $60 (U.S. Residents/Permanent Residents) and $110 (International Applicants) to NCSA.
   2. Two (2) letters of recommendation:
      • One letter preferably from a private music teacher or instructor;
      • One letter from an individual who can address the student’s level of maturity (as an academic teacher or guidance counselor).
   3. A CD recording or a cassette of two (2) pieces, movements, or (for wind and brass players) excerpts that demonstrate the applicant’s overall ability and level.
   4. Repertoire list specifying the music the applicant has studied.

Visual Arts

1. Minimum age is 14.
2. Submit:
   1. The application and non-refundable application fee, payable by check or money order (no cash) of $60 (U.S. Residents/Permanent Residents) and $110 (International Applicants) to NCSA.
   2. Two (or more) letters of recommendation;
      • One letter from an academic teacher that can speak to the student's level of maturity and capacity for success in an intensive, four-week workshop environment.
      • One letter, preferably from an art teacher; again, written by someone who can speak to the student’s level of maturity and capacity for success in an intensive, four-week workshop environment.
   3. A one-page statement on your expectations for the Visual Arts Summer Program.

Summer Program students are housed by age and gender in up to eight air-conditioned residence halls.  All high school students are required to live on campus, unless they live with parents or legal guardians within a 25 mile commuting distance of the School.  Middle and high school students are housed in residence halls in one area of the campus, while high school graduates and college students live in another area of campus. Men and women are housed separately in all cases. All students living on campus are required to be on the meal plan. There are no exceptions. If you have questions or special requests regarding room and board, contact the Office of Residence Life at 336-770-3280.

Students will be housed with other students from different art disciplines.  Due to the renovation of 4 residence halls and the specific hall used for the gender, students will either live in a double or a triple residence hall room.  Only male students will have the option of living in a single residence hall room.  Students will share communal bathrooms but each room has its own sink.  Each floor is managed by live-in resident counselors; many of whom are NCSA college students.  The resident counselors, closely supervised and supported by a professional staff, are trained to address student concerns and to nurture a sense of community on the hall. 

Summer Program housing is limited.  Students must pay in full by the date on their tuition statement and have returned their housing agreement to the Residence Life Office to be guaranteed housing.  All students who request housing and live within a 25 mile radius of the school will be placed on a housing waitlist and will be notified when housing is available for them.

   documentation outlined in this document.
• International applicants who complete an online application must print the
   required pages of the application, complete all required information, sign the
   application (parent signature required if applicant is under the age of 18 at the
   time of application) and mail the required pages along with the non-refundable
   application fee to the Office of Admissions.
• Applicants who are attending a college or university in the United States must
   supply a copy of their current I-20 and visa to the Office of Admissions at the
   time of application.
• All applicants accepted into the summer program must have an F-1 visa to attend
   summer programs.
• All international students must obtain a visa prior to enrollment. Government
  documents for a student visa will only be issued after acceptance and tuition has
   been paid in full. 
• Applicants cannot attend the Summer Program on a Visitor’s visa.
