Led by Clifton Matthews and Joanne Inkman, the Piano Workshop offers daily private lessons; a daily master class in which students perform works-in-progress; structured practice time; numerous performance opportunities; a guided exploration of special topics relevant to keyboard study such as ear-training, sight-reading, keyboard harmony, ensemble playing and extensive use of NCSA's excellent library. The Workshop culminates with a final performance featuring all the students, at NCSA’s Watson Chamber Music Hall.

Faculty


Clifton Matthews, piano
A member of the artist-faculty of the North Carolina School of the Arts, Clifton Matthews holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Juilliard School and was the recipient of two Fulbright awards for study in Munich, Germany. In addition to his faculty position at the North Carolina School of the Arts, Mr. Matthews has been for many years on the summer faculty of the Tibor Varga Festival in Sion, Switzerland. He has also given master classes in France at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau and at the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud in Aix-en-Provence, as well as in Britain, Scandinavia and Canada. He performs frequently in recitals in the United States and Europe, commanding a wide repertoire from Bach's complete Well-Tempered Clavier through contemporary works, including three premieres of scores by composer Kenneth Frazelle.  He holds the Casella Prize for piano playing from the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy, and is also a former winner of the New York Concert Artists Guild.  In 1998 he was the recipient of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for excellence in teaching. Winners of numerous competitions, his former students are active as performers and teachers around the world.

Joanne Inkman, piano
Joanne Inkman is a member of the Wake Forest University Piano Faculty.  Ms. Inkman received her early musical training in piano and viola in Vancouver, British Columbia.  As a collaborative pianist, her trio won first place in the Friends of Chamber Music Competition in Vancouver.  At age 17, she became an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. Awards include three British Columbia cultural grants and the Holderness Fellowship. Ms. Inkman studied with Clifton Matthews at NCSA and completed her training with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Ms. Inkman is a versatile musician who enjoys teaching, performing solo piano, chamber music and accompanying choral groups, church services and opera. In 1991, she made her New York Debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and has performed in Canada, the eastern United States, Switzerland and Austria.
